Abstract

This study examines the moral problem posed by Judith’s story in the Bible: how to morally justify the deception and murder committed by Judith against Holofernes. Using insights from feminist readings, the author emphasizes the importance of ethics of care to cope with the problem. Judith is not seen only as an individual figure, but a figure who is connected to the suffering and struggles of her community. Thus, deception and murder are seen as the last and legitimate attempt and strategy of a weak community to resist the hegemony of the oppressor. The purpose of this research is to present a more balanced way to read and assess the morality of Judith’s story, by utilizing insights from feminist ethics and cultural anthropology. The author uses literature review method to show that Juidth is indeed rightly called a Jewish heroine, despite all  her lies and deceptions, and also the murder she committed.
