Abstract

This research aims at developing essay test based on High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), analyze the characteristics and quality of essay test, and investigate the problem solving skills of students on acid base solution concept at SMA Negeri 6 Yogyakarta. Essay test based on HOTS with supporting instruments such as lesson plans, observation sheets of chemistry learning, presentation assessment sheet and students questionnaire responses are developed to 4-D Model which includes define, design, develop, and disseminate stages (Thiagarajan, Semmel, & Semmel, 1974: 5). Instruments were developed, validated, and done limited testing and field trials. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using Rasch model and descriptive. The results show that 17 from 20 items declared valid and Cronbachs alpha value is 0.93 which is in excellent condition. Quality items are excellent proven in terms of content, construction, and structure. A number of 10 items selected rated effective and practical when applied in chemistry learning. In general, the average of students problem solving skills is still relatively low.
