Abstract

Research on characterization of Au-198 radioactive source as an alternative source of radiation for spectroscopy has been carried out. Characterization is done by counting the source of Au-198 (E = 411.8 keV, T = 2.69 days) with EG&G ORTEC MCA coupled with NaI (Tl) detector. Au-198 obtained from the thermal neutron activation Au-197 in a nuclear reactor Kartini, BATAN Yogyakarta. The Pulse magnification variation (gain) was set to 2 volts, 3 volts and 4 volts. The counting process produces a graph of the spectrum of gamma energy with the x-axis represents the number of channels that are comparable to the energy radiation and the y-axis represents the number of the detected radiation. As a result, the spectrum of Au-198 can be well identified by th MCA EG&G ORTEC detector coupled with NaI (Tl). Isotope Au-198 can be used to support research
and development of applications of radioactivity in Indonesia, as well as for commercial applications.

Keywords: spectrometer system, spectroscopy, gamma radiation, isotope, Au-198.
