Abstract

The use of social media, especially TikTok, has become a widespread phenomenon among adolescents, including vocational high school students. However, this also causes problems such as addiction, decreased productivity, and symptoms of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). FOMO is the worry or anxiety of missing moments or trends that are happening on social media. To overcome this issue, efforts are needed to improve wise social media behavior through media literacy education. This study aims to improve wise social media behavior and reduce FOMO symptoms among students of SMK N 6 Yogyakarta through educational cinema intervention and other supporting activities. This study used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles, including planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research population was students of class XI, Spa and Beauty Therapy (SBT) Study Program at SMK N 6 Yogyakarta, with a sample of 6 students who had high FOMO scores. Data were collected through the FOMO Scale questionnaire, behavioral observation, as well as reflection and interviews with students. The results showed an improvement in wise social media behavior, such as being more selective in choosing content, limiting usage time, and setting activity priorities. In addition, there was a significant decrease in FOMO scores, an improvement in digital literacy through creating positive TikTok content, and strengthening group dynamics and solidarity among students. This study shows that the educational cinema approach and group guidance services are proven effective in improving wise social media behavior and reducing FOMO symptoms among vocational high school students
